My strategy for the year will develop as the year goes on and the likely species list dwindles. A few plans are already in place, though.
December will be spent tracking rarities on the island. While most rare birds get a flurry of reports when first sighted, the updates thin out as time goes on. Many birds that find themselves here in the winter will stick around, at least for a while.
On January 1, I will participate in the Duncan Christmas Bird Count. January 2-11 will be spent trying to pick up as many island rarities and regular winter birds as possible, as I’ll then be heading to California for the Morrow Bay Birding Festival. On my return home, I will frantically go after anything new that was found while I was away and continue going after the winter regulars.
Each month, I plan to spend about a week somewhere else on the island, the exact locations still to be determined. I know I’ll be spending time with the birds feeding on the herring spawn in the early spring, and I’ll be attending the Tofino Shorebird Festival for the first time in early May.
