Contact Me

A birder friend once told me that the best way to see a rare bird was to go immediately once it was reported.  I’m going to do that as much as possible. I will have a “ready bag” with me so that I can take off as soon as I hear of a rarity.

Another key is to be reachable so here is my contact information:

  1. Hi Ann,
Nice to see that someone else is having just as much trouble as I have had locating a great grey owl. Went all the way to Tunkwa Lake near Kamloops last spring twice and still could not find one to photograph. Even though I live in Nanaimo it is a whole lot closer to go to Quadra Island than to Kamloops. I may make the trip up to Quadra Island next weekend and do a bit of scouting around myself. It certainly does sound odd to me that the owl has been seen there for so long if it is just an interloper. And for such a rarity to be seen several winters in a row is somehow more than a coincidence. Really hope you do find it some day and can add it to your count.
By the way, check out my site at larges.ca. If you feel that there are any images there that you might like to use on your blog feel free to borrow them. When you get to the main page go to the “recent images” link for all of my best stuff.
    Happy trails and good birding!

    1. Gorgeous photos, Steve! I will be returning to Quadra myself once I get back from California. Where did you get the shots of the Long-Eared Owl? This is a bird that I suspect is underreported on Vancouver Island. I will be making a concerted effort to try to find one of those this year!

  2. Hi Ann,
Those shots of the long-eared owl were taken at Boundary Bay last winter. Although this would not classify as being part of your search area, there have been a few more sighted there this year. The last long-eared owl that I had encountered personally on the island was at the Nanaimo estuary but it had been killed. Reports had said that it had been shot but it looked more like a territorial dispute with another raptor to me. It was about three years back in the winter time. Apparently Guy Monty had reported a pair of them there a couple of years in a row but I am out there at least four days out of the week and even searching diligently in all of the hedgerows have never turned one up. If I ever do come across one this year I will be sure to let you know.
    Steve
